From study trips organized by the Siam Society and a private one by Mrs. Ruth Gerson, Dr. Navamintr Vitayakul had opportunities to visit silk weaving villages and textile stores in the northeastern regions of India. In Kolkata (Calcutta) the capital of West Bengal, he was exposed to the higher form of Kantha, an embroidery technique that is popular in the Bengal states, plus textiles both woven and dyed in other techniques. In Odisha, he visited Nuapatna village where sericulture industry prospers producing Ikat textiles and saris. In Tripura, tribal cotton textiles with striking colours and patterns are woven from hip looms. In Assam, he visited Sualkuchi village where silk textiles from different types of silkworms are produced and combined with metal threads to give extra beauty to the pieces. Dr. Vitayak ul will speak about the selection of textiles from these northeastern Indian states that he will bring for show, accompanied by photographs of people and textiles taken on location.
Dr. Navamintr Vitayakul or Khun Tom has academic and professional background in Political Science and Mass Communication. After careers in market research, advertising, and branding strategy and consultancy, he currently works in his family business in hospitality and restaurant—the Rose Hotel Bangkok and Ruen Urai Fine Thai Cuisine. He has various interests in cultural activities from visual to performing arts and has contributed to several publications such as Bangkok 101, Thailand Tatler, the Bangkok Post’s the Magazine, Lips, and Hello! Travel.
