Day Trip to Uthai Thani Saturday, 3 February 2018
Ban Rai and other weaving villages are situated in Uthai Thai, a 3-hour drive northwest of Bangkok. The people who live in these villages originated in Laos and are known generally as Lao Khrang. The Lao Khrang, like many groups of people in Southeast Asia, are named after the dominant color in their garments. These villagers dye their skirts red, using the sap of the lac tree. The Lao Khrang weave banners, many with animals and geometric designs. They also weave utilitarian textiles for the use in their homes. In Ban Rai we’ll visit the Thai National Artist Pha Cham Pi, who weaves her village history into her textiles. This region is lush, green and still unaffected by tourism. Khon Chomporn Dhanesnittaya who is knowledgeable in Thai textiles will lead this trip, which promises to be interesting.
