Dear Members and Subscribers

On Saturday, February 25th 2017  the Collectors Corner  is pleased to announce a presentation with  Rupert Smith on TIBETAN PRAYER RUGS AND OLD TIBETAN SILKS.

Rupert Smith first travelled to Tibet in 1986 at which time he began to study Tibetan culture, and in particular the unique craft of weaving. He visited remote areas on the Tibetan Plateau where he acquired rugs that were for daily use, and has since been sponsoring there a project dedicated to making Wangden meditation rugs, believed to be the first hand knotted rugs in Tibet, a skill that he helped to revive.  Smith has written a book entitled Secrets of Tibetan Weaving: The Greensmith Collection, on which he will base part of the lecture discussing such subjects as the origins of Tibetan weaving, loom techniques, monastic carpets and horse trappings.  He will also discuss Central Asian silks of the 7th and 8th centuries made during the Tibetan Imperial period which influenced later Tibetan textile designs and even the national flag.  Mr. Smith will bring examples of these silks to examine and c ompare with Tibetan rugs.
