TEXTILES OF THAILAND’S HILL TRIBE PEOPLE

In the mountains of north and northwest Thailand live several hill tribes known in Thai as Chao Khao, non-Tai speaking ethnic minority people who have their distinct cultures that include their particular way of dressing. The major six groups that had settled in Thailand are the Hmong, Mien, Karen, Lahu, Lisu and Akha. They have originated in the Tibetan plateau, southern China and Burma. Serving as markers of ethnicity and cultural identity, traditional textiles are an important aspect of material culture of the hill tribes. The techniques applied in making the textiles vary from tribe to tribe, by which they are identified. While some excel in weaving, others specialize in embroidery, batik, appliqué and reversed appliqué. The garments are often embellished with silver buttons, coins and dangles.
Khun Chomporn, a committee member of the Thai Textile Society, is an avid collector with a vast knowledge of textiles. She will bring examples of hill tribe outfits from her extensive collection and explain their background and technique as well as some information about the tribes. This is a great opportunity to have a glimpse into the handwork of cultures that are fast disappearing.
