HAND WOVEN AND MANUFACTURED TEXTILES IN THAILAND AND THE PHILIPPINES

What importance do these hold for their country?

By Dr. Simon Ellis

         Saturday, 2 December  2017

Southeast Asia has one of the richest traditions of hand-woven textiles in the world, and yet many countries persist in supporting mass produced textiles for western markets. These mass markets are subject to great fluctuations that threaten jobs and provide diminishing returns in economic and environmental terms. This talk will argue that countries should concentrate on sustainable development of traditional weaving with benefits in economic, social and environmental terms. Figures in the Philippines demonstrate that the weavers whose skills have been built up over centuries are a vulnerable population. They must be supported by the government or else their unique cultural identity will be lost. Hand weaving and mass production weaving in Thailand will be discussed as well.

This lecture provides us with an angle of the textile industry by villagers and factories, a viewpoint that we have not experienced much in the past. It is interesting to note the status of both today.
