Date: June 27th 2017

Dear Members,

The TTS is pleased to announce a talk by Sarttarat Muddin, Curator and Dale Carolyn Gluckman, senior consultant, of the  Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles,  "THE JAVANESE BATIK COLLECTION  OF KING CHULALONGKORN (r. 1868-1910)"  Saturday 15 July 2017.

During the preliminary research for the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles about a decade ago, the design and curatorial consulting teams were taken into the storerooms of the Inner Court of the Grand Palace under the guidance of the late Professor Smitthi Siribhadra.  Among the historic royal textiles and elements of dress shown to the team, were several batik hip wrappers that were easily recognized as Javanese. Where did they come from?  Who collected them, under what circumstances and why? How many pieces were there and in what condition? Why was it such an important re-discovery and why had the batiks never been exhibited, published or researched?  These and many more questions will be answered in this talk, and plans for the collection’s public debut at the QSMT in the fall of 2018 will be discussed. Highlights from this truly “hidden treasure” will be shared along with historic photos related to the format ion of the collection. Much additional information has been learned since an earlier version of this talk was presented by the speakers at the first QSMT International Symposium in 2013.
